I am a British artist making small oil paintings that dwell on incidental moments of home life: my partner waking or reading, my mother bathing, sisters interacting. My series This Moment, comprising twenty-four paintings no larger than 30 x 30 cm, registers these daily rhythms.
Working at this scale shapes both the making and encounter. The paintings ask for close attention and their surfaces bear the marks of a direct, gestural process. I work on board, holding the panel in my hands as I paint, completing each work in a single sustained session. The surface is scored into, rubbed back with a rag, and worked into with cotton buds. I am drawn towards a soft palette of whites and greys punctuated by fields of colour—tones informed in part by the chalk landscape of Dorset where I grew up.
Within the compositions, doors, windows, and mirrors introduce internal frames and thresholds. These divide and extend the pictorial space, opening areas of depth and reflection within the painting’s physical limits. Layered planes and subtle elisions allow forms to meet and interact within the small, bounded surface.
